indiestore at the Camden Crawl 2008

Last Friday indiestore visited The Camden Crawl…

After a long day fighting off MTV, the BBC and Channel 4 to interview the Camden Crawl bands, we left the cloudy Camden daylight and descended into the near black gloom of appropriately named venue Underworld to see indiestore’s very own Ipso Facto. After the shocking confession in our interview earlier, that drummer Victoria is a talented rapper and loves a bit of Jay-Z, we were wondering if their show would take a different direction tonight. But no, they were as restrained as ever, delivering a dark and suitably gothic set to an encore-demanding crowd.

At the Earl of Camden we saw The Rushes – well I say ‘saw’, I’m not very tall and there were a lot of people in front of me, and I suppose that’s a testament to their popularity. They played some standard catchy indie pop, and it was fine, just not my cup of tea… or warm can of Red Stripe.

So on to the next venue with my beloved queue-jumping pass. Without one, it’s probably safer to just go to one place, or maybe two, if you don’t fancy watching the bands through the windows of the venue.

Camden’s Black Cap was absolutely packed. Swedish singer Lykke Li is obviously very popular. She sounded good and everyone sang along with single ‘I’m Good I’m Gone’ before she slipped into a crowd-pleasing rendition of A Tribe Called Quest’s Can I Kick It. The rather irritating scenester presenters from E4 hung from the DJ box above the stage throughout the performance, and I felt a strong need to leave the venue before they actually started DJing.

Then to the final venue of the night, right across town to the Purple Turtle. The queue stretched right down the street, and the bouncers seemed to be operating a one in-one out system, which considering Crystal Castles were due on in about fifteen minutes, seemed a bit unlikely. Anyhow, for those who managed to get in, the Canadian electro band didn’t disappoint. They were loud and frantic and very good.

Have a look at our photos here, and watch this space for video interviews with artists including Hadouken!, Lykke Li, Yoav and Ipso Facto.
