April’s indiestore live night – The Hugs, Panama Kings, Pavilion

The Hugs

Despite the unfortunate clash with some little football match, Tuesday’s indiestore live night was a big success, if a bit quieter than usual.

To the stage first was Portland, Oregon’s The Hugs. They were discovered by the same man who played a big part in the success of none other than The Strokes and The Libertines, and they’re not even out of their teens yet. If any band stands a good chance of making it big, it’s these young men. Their set was ramshackle and lively, with a nice bit of guitar hurling, as was the case with second act Panama Kings.

The Belfast band draw some pretty impressive comparisons. One internet blogger has even described them as “too much” like Modest Mouse, however, as they told us, they gratefully accept this as a massive compliment. Nevertheless Panama Kings have a lot more depth and individuality to their music than their constant musical comparisons might suggest.

Last on were Wakefield band Pavilion playing their first ever London gig. They said they were nervous but it didn’t come across on stage, and they played a polished set, albeit without the guitar throwing.

Don’t miss the next indiestore gig on 27 May, featuring Sennen, Passengers, Ham Sandwich and Rob the Rich. Let’s hope there are no sporting events scheduled that night…
